Even though other people seem to be unaware of her special powers, she knows that she is better than everyone else. She is ordered by her father to marry a pig farmer from her community village, which she does not wish to follow. In order to get away from it and save herself from getting married a very young age, Paksenarrion runs away from her home and joins a mercenary army company.

Before taking such a step, she makes up her mind that she will not see her family again, if she has to, but will not marry the pig farmer and destroy her life. She goes on to a memorable adventure and undergoes a number of journeys that help her get transformed into a hero and get remembered in many heroic songs. She considers herself chosen by the gods to help a lost ruler restore the throne of his kingdom. The ruler is introduced in the form of Kieri Phelan, the duke of the kingdom of Loyna. The plot of the novel tells the life story of Paksenarrion Dorthansdotter as she lives through it. The novel proved to be a brilliantly written and exciting description of brave and heroic adventures.

The readers liked the superb cast of the protagonists and supporting characters depicted in the plot of the novel. They also seemed enchanted and very much impressed by the efforts of author Elizabeth Moon in writing down the interesting story of Paksenarrion Dorthansdotter. Author Elizabeth Moon has once again tried to bring out an exciting novel involving meticulous world building, bold and imaginative fights, dangerous military action and some deft characterizations.

In the opening sequence of the plot of the novel, it is shown that the kingdoms of Loyna and Tsaia get restored to peace and order. This is made possible only because of the crowning of the kings Mikeli and Kieri Phelan in their respective kingdoms. Kieri is described as a mercenary captain with royal blood in his body. His heritage as half elf is resented by the humans and the elves of the kingdom of Loyna alike.

People look forward to hope and promise when trouble seemed to be brewing underneath. Because of the evil remnants of the Verrakaien magelords being at large, Mikeli cannot sit quietly on his throne. Kieri seems to be hounded by everyone to get married and provide an heir to the kingdom, which does not seem to be a major concern for him. Soon, a strange rift develops between him, his grandmother, and the co-ruler, the queen of the immortal elves called as the Lady. In the meantime, the kingdom of Pargun in the north gets invaded.
